Do you need a website if you already have Instagram and WhatsApp?

If Instagram brings you enquiries and WhatsApp closes them, a website can feel like an expense with no job to do. That is a fair reading of your own evidence, and for some businesses the honest answer is that you do not need one yet.

For most, the question is not website or social. It is what each one is actually good at, and which gap is costing you money right now.

What social genuinely does better

Reach you have not paid for. A reel can put you in front of people who were not looking for you, which no website will ever do. Proof, too: a feed of real work, dated, with comments under it, is more convincing than any "Why choose us" section.

And speed. You can post today. A website takes weeks.

If your customers find you by browsing rather than searching — food, fashion, salons, décor, anything visual and impulsive — social is doing the heavy lifting and should keep doing it.

What a website does that social cannot

It shows up when someone is searching for your service. This is the big one. Someone typing "CCTV installation Greater Noida" or "GST consultant near me" is ready to buy now. Instagram does not appear for those searches. A website and a Google Business Profile do. These are different customers from the ones who stumble on a reel, and they are usually further down the path to paying.

You own it. Your followers are rented. An account can be restricted, hacked or lost, and the reach you get is whatever the algorithm decides this month. Nobody can change your website's rules overnight.

It answers the questions you keep answering. Price ranges, areas you serve, turnaround time, what the process is. Every one of those typed into WhatsApp for the hundredth time is a few minutes you could have spent working.

It makes you checkable. For anything expensive or considered — B2B, services, education, healthcare — people look you up before they call. A site with real information, an address, and a phone number that works is often the thing that makes them call rather than the next listing.

It takes payments and bookings without you. An order form, a booking slot, an advance payment — things a DM cannot do at two in the morning.

When Instagram alone is genuinely fine

Be honest about this. Skip the website for now if:

  • Everything you sell is visual and impulse-driven, and discovery is the whole game
  • You have more enquiries than you can service already
  • You are testing whether the business works at all
  • There is nobody to keep a site updated and it would go stale in a month

A neglected website is worse than none. An abandoned blog, last year's prices and a contact form nobody checks all say the same thing to a visitor.

The one thing to do even without a website

Claim your Google Business Profile. It is free, it takes an afternoon, and it puts you on Google Maps for "near me" searches — the exact traffic social does not give you. For many local businesses this returns more than their first website does. We wrote a local SEO checklist that walks through it.

The smallest website worth having

If you decide to build, you do not need fifteen pages. A single page that loads fast and covers:

  • What you do and who for, in plain words
  • Proof: photos of real work, a few named reviews
  • Prices or ranges, even approximate — the page people look for and rarely find
  • Service area
  • A phone number that is a tappable link, and a WhatsApp button
  • Your address with a map, if customers visit

That is enough to rank for your own name, support the Google listing and answer the repeat questions. You can grow it later.

The honest summary

Social gets you found by people who were not looking. A website gets you found by people who are, and keeps what you have built when a platform changes its mind.

If you are busy enough from Instagram today, start with the Google Business Profile and keep posting. If you are losing enquiries to competitors who show up in search, or answering the same five questions every day, that is a website doing nothing for you yet.
