We built 507 free tools. Here is what they do and why they are free.

On News Appite, the news site we publish, there are 507 free tools. No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit, no email address required.

People reasonably ask what the catch is. There isn't one, and the reason they exist is simple enough to explain.

Why they exist

We kept needing them. Compressing a photo to exactly 20 KB for a form, pulling a table out of a PDF, converting a client's HEIC photos so Windows would open them — small jobs that interrupt real work. The sites that do this are mostly the same: upload your file to a stranger's server, watch an ad, get a watermark, hit a daily limit.

So we built our own, and then kept building. It is also the most honest sales material we have. Anybody can claim they write good software; a tool you can use right now, that loads fast and does the job, is the claim and the proof in one.

The part that actually matters: nothing is uploaded

Almost every converter and PDF tool on the site runs inside your browser. Your file is read by the page on your own device, processed there, and the result is handed back to you. It never travels to a server, because there is no server in the path.

This is not a privacy slogan, it is how they are built — the image, PDF, audio and video engines are compiled to WebAssembly and run locally. Two practical consequences:

  • Confidential files stay confidential. Bank statements, salary slips, Aadhaar and PAN copies, contracts, medical reports. The usual advice is "never upload these to a random converter", and it is good advice. Here there is nothing to upload.
  • No size limit and no queue. The limit is your own device's memory, not somebody's free tier.

For a few tools — the ones that genuinely need it — this is not possible, and the tool says so on the page.

What is actually in there

PDF tools — merge, split, compress, rotate, unlock, add page numbers or a watermark, delete pages, PDF to Word, PDF to JPG, OCR a scan so the text becomes selectable.

Photo and file tools — the ones Indian form portals force on you: compress to 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, change DPI to 200 or 300, passport-size photo maker, signature cropping, EXIF removal, document scanner.

Everyday calculators — GST, EMI, SIP, percentage, age, BMI, discount, unit conversion.

Government and citizen tools — income tax under the current slabs, HRA exemption, PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi, EPF, gratuity, salary CTC to in-hand, PAN/Aadhaar/GSTIN format checks.

Student tools — CGPA to percentage, GPA, marks percentage, attendance planner, citation generator, typing test.

Developer and text tools — JSON formatter, Base64, URL encoding, hashes, UUIDs, QR codes, regex tester, JWT decoder.

397 file converters — images, documents, spreadsheets, audio, video, archives, fonts, even 3D models. If you have a file in one format and need it in another, it is probably there.

The ones people use most

If you only ever open one of them, it is likely to be one of these:

There are also step-by-step guides for the jobs people get stuck on, like getting a photo and signature under the size limit a recruitment portal demands.

Why free, honestly

The news site carries advertising, and the tools bring people to it. That is the whole business model. You are not the product in any darker sense — nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to collect even if we wanted to.

And if you want something like this built

Everything described above — 507 tools, in-browser processing, pages that load fast enough to rank — is the same work we do for clients: web applications, internal tools, sites that are quick because somebody cared about the milliseconds.

If you have something in mind, tell us what you are building. And if you just came for a free PDF converter, that is genuinely fine too — it is right here, no sign-up.
