How long does SEO take to show results?

Somebody has promised you page one in thirty days. They are either redefining "page one" — for a phrase nobody searches, often your own brand name — or they are about to do something your domain will pay for later.
Here is what the timeline actually looks like, and what makes it move.
The short version
| Situation | First real movement | Meaningful results |
|---|---|---|
| Local business, low competition | 4–8 weeks | 3–4 months |
| Established site, new pages | 4–8 weeks | 2–4 months |
| New domain, competitive niche | 3–4 months | 6–12 months |
| National, high-value keywords | 6 months | 12 months+ |
"Meaningful" means enquiries, not a ranking screenshot.
Why it takes that long
Three clocks run at once, and the slowest one sets the pace.
Google has to find and index the page. On a healthy site this takes days. On a new or rarely-crawled site it can take weeks — Google decides how often to visit, and a new domain does not get much attention at first.
It has to decide where you belong. Early rankings move around while Google works out what the page is about and how people respond to it. Positions bouncing in month two is normal, not a problem.
Trust accumulates. This is the slow clock. Other sites linking to you, your name being searched, pages that stay useful over time. There is no way to buy this honestly and no way to rush it.
What the months usually look like
Month 1 — fixing and building. The technical audit, the things that were broken, the pages that should exist and don't. Little visible movement. This is the month clients get nervous and it is the month that decides the rest.
Months 2–3 — first signs. Impressions rise before clicks do. You start appearing for long, specific phrases — "emergency plumber sector 62" before "plumber noida". Search Console shows it clearly, your revenue does not yet.
Months 4–6 — the shape appears. Competitive terms start placing. Enquiries from search become a number you can point at rather than an anecdote.
Months 6–12 — compounding. The pages that worked get stronger, and the work gets cheaper per result because the domain itself is now trusted.
What makes it faster
- An existing site with some history. Age and prior links are a real head start.
- Local intent. "Near me" searches are far less contested than national ones. A good Google Business Profile can produce calls in weeks — our local SEO checklist covers it.
- Low competition. Ranking for a niche B2B phrase is a different sport from ranking for "web design company".
- A technically healthy site. If pages are slow or blocked from indexing, nothing else can work. Usually a few weeks of fixing.
- Publishing consistently. Four useful pages a month beats forty thin ones, by a distance.
What makes it slower
A brand-new domain with no history. A site that cannot be edited without going through an agency for every change. Content nobody internally will supply. And competitors who have been doing this for five years and have not stopped.
What to measure before rankings move
Judging month two by revenue tells you nothing. Watch these instead, all free in Search Console:
- Impressions — are you being shown more than last month?
- Pages with at least one impression — is more of the site being seen?
- Average position for your target terms — moving from 40 to 20 is invisible in traffic and is real progress
- Clicks on brand vs non-brand — non-brand clicks are new people finding you
A report that only shows ranking screenshots for terms you have never heard of is hiding behind the easy numbers.
The honest warning
The techniques that produce results in thirty days are usually bought links or mass-generated pages. They can work briefly. When they stop working — a core update, a manual action — the recovery takes longer than the original work would have, and sometimes the domain never fully recovers.
If somebody guarantees a position and a date, ask what they do when it does not happen. Nobody controls Google's results, so a guarantee is a statement about their sales process, not their method.
How we work
We say three to six months for most businesses, and we would rather lose the project than promise thirty days. Month one is usually technical fixes and the pages that should exist; after that you get monthly Search Console numbers — impressions, positions, non-brand clicks — not a screenshot of one lucky keyword.
Tell us what you want to rank for and we will tell you honestly how long it is likely to take, and whether it is worth it.
