What does it cost to build a mobile app in India in 2026?

"App banwana hai" covers everything from a shop's ordering screen to a product with payments, chat and a live map. The price range is correspondingly wide, which makes most quotes impossible to compare until you know what moves the number.

Here are honest ranges and what sits behind them.

The short version

What you are building Typical range
Simple app — a few screens, content, a form ₹1,50,000 – ₹4,00,000
Standard business app — login, profiles, admin panel ₹4,00,000 – ₹10,00,000
Marketplace or on-demand app — payments, two user types, live status ₹10,00,000 – ₹25,00,000
Complex product — real-time features, heavy integrations, scale ₹25,00,000 upwards

Wide, and they should be. Anyone who quotes a precise figure from a one-line brief is guessing, or quoting a template.

What actually drives the number

Cross-platform or native. One Flutter or React Native codebase serving Android and iOS costs far less than two native apps, and for most business apps the difference in the finished product is invisible to users. Native earns its extra cost when you need heavy graphics, deep hardware access or absolute platform polish. We wrote about how we pick between them.

Whether it needs a backend. An app that only displays content is one piece of work. An app with accounts, data that syncs, an admin panel and an API is three. The backend is usually the larger half and the part clients do not picture when they imagine "an app".

Login and user accounts. Phone OTP, email, Google sign-in, roles and permissions, password reset, account deletion — the last one is now required by both stores. Individually small, collectively weeks.

Payments. A gateway integration is not just the payment screen: it is refunds, failures, retries, reconciliation and the test cycle for each. Add GST handling if you invoice.

Real-time anything. Live tracking, chat, instant status updates. Each pushes architecture and cost up sharply.

Design. A functional app from standard components is cheaper than a designed one with its own identity, custom motion and illustration. Both are legitimate; decide which you are buying.

Content and data. Someone has to produce the catalogue, the categories, the photographs. Usually that is you, and it is usually what delays launch — the same pattern as website timelines.

The costs that continue after launch

The build is the one-time figure. These are not:

  • Google Play developer account — about ₹2,000, one time
  • Apple Developer Program — about $99 a year, roughly ₹8,500, every year, non-negotiable if you want to be on iOS
  • Servers and database — from a few hundred rupees a month for something small to real money at scale
  • Push notifications, SMS and OTP — per message; OTP SMS in India is a running cost people forget
  • Maintenance — both stores change their rules every year. Apps that are not updated eventually stop being accepted, then eventually stop working. Budget 15–20% of the build cost annually.

An app is a commitment, not a purchase. If nobody will own it after launch, that is worth knowing before you start.

Do you actually need an app?

Sometimes the honest answer is no, and it saves you several lakh.

A mobile-friendly website does most of what a first app would do, costs a fraction, needs no store approval, and nobody has to install anything. Users install apps they open repeatedly — not ones they will use twice a year.

An app earns its place when you need push notifications to bring people back, offline use, camera or GPS as part of the core job, or genuinely repeat usage. If you are not sure which side you are on, build the web version first and let demand tell you.

How to get quotes you can compare

  • Write down the screens. Even a rough list changes the conversation entirely.
  • Say whether you need iOS, Android or both, from day one.
  • Ask explicitly whether the backend and admin panel are included.
  • Ask who owns the code and the store accounts — the same ownership questions as a website, and they matter more here, because store accounts are painful to move.
  • Ask what maintenance costs after launch, in writing.

How we work

We quote fixed prices against a written scope, with the backend and admin panel listed as separate line items so you can see what each part costs. The store accounts are opened in your name, and you get the source code.

If you are weighing an app against a web version, tell us what you want it to do and we will say which one we would build — including when the answer is "not an app yet".
